An instrumental figure in establishing women’s athletics at Marshall, Linda Holmes moved quickly from her time as a student-athlete into becoming a coach and administrator for the fledgling women’s program. The Scott Depot, W.Va., native played badminton and volleyball at Marshall, helping to spark the 1972 and 1973 volleyball squads to West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships and berths in the Midwest AIAW Tournaments. After graduation, she became an assistant athletic director and at various times coached the volleyball, tennis and softball teams. After leaving her post in the Marshall athletic department, Holmes continued to serve the university in a variety of positions, including with the Marshall Alumni Association and the Marshall University School of Medicine, and as a member of and then chairperson of the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame Committee. Holmes was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.
