Linden Meade
- Induction:
- 1991
- Class:
- 1959
No golfer in Marshall history has put up a better round than the 10-under-par 63 shot by Linden Meade at the Elks Country Club in Kalamazoo, Mich., on May 23, 1958. Meade followed his MAC- and Marshall-record round with an even par 73 the next day, making him the individual medalist at that MAC Tournament and also giving Meade a berth in that year’s NCAA Tournament in Williamstown, Mass. The previous season, as a junior, Meade finished second individually at the MAC Tournament at the Twin Lakes Country Club in Kent, Ohio, right behind teammate and medalist Jack Freeman. The Chapmanville, W.Va., native had won the West Virginia state title as a senior in high school before moving on to Marshall, and his golf success continued after he returned to Logan County; Meade qualified for the U.S. Open in 1962, won the West Virginia Open in 1963 and 1984, won the West Virginia PGA Championship in 1962, 1971 and 1976, and served as the club PGA professional at the Riverview Golf Club in Madison, W.Va. Meade was named the West Virginia PGA Player of the Year in 1984. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.
