Known as one of the toughest players, pound for pound, ever to don the Green and White, 5-foot-7, 170-pound Ron Darby was one of the most prolific running backs in Marshall history. The Orangeburg, S.C., native made an immediate impact at Marshall, winning Southern Conference Freshman of the Year honors in 1986 and then exploding for 1,506 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns as he helped lead Marshall to an appearance in the 1987 NCAA Division I-AA national championship game. Darby ran for 1,282 yards and another 16 touchdowns as Marshall won its first Southern Conference championship in 1988, and by the time his Thundering Herd career was complete he had rushed for a school-record 3,903 yards and scored 38 touchdowns as a three-time All-Southern Conference honoree, amassing 5,747 all-purpose yards, also the school record at that time. Darby was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.
