Making the short trip across the Ohio River to attend Marshall after a standout football and track and field career at Chesapeake High School – where he was an Ohio State runner-up multiple times in the shot put and discus – Shawn McWhorter continued his success with the Thundering Herd, earning All-Southern Conference track and field honors seven times over the course of his career, a Marshall record. McWhorter won the Southern Conference indoor shot put titles in 1982, 1983 and 1984 and the outdoor shot put crowns in 1981, 1983 and 1984, and also won all-league recognition in the discus. McWhorter was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
