As a sharpshooting guard at Sheridan High School in Thornville, Ohio, Tammie Green caught the attention of basketball coaches across the nation. But when Marshall offered Green the opportunity to play both basketball and golf, she jumped at the chance. Green did play two seasons of basketball at Marshall, but when the overlap of the seasons forced her to settle on one, she made the very prudent decision to focus on golf. Green qualified individually for the AIAW National Tournament three times (1979, ‘80 and ‘81) and helped the entire Marshall team qualify in 1982. In 1981 she posted the lowest score by an amateur at the LPGA event in Wheeling, W.Va. She won four events at Marshall, three during her senior season, and then embarked on a professional career. Green was the Futures Tour Player of the Year in 1985 and 1986, winning 11 events during that time, and became the LPGA Rookie of the Year in 1987. She went on to win seven events on the LPGA Tour, including a “Major” victory at the 1989 du Maurier Classic. Green played for the USA Solheim Cup team, helping to beat the European team in 1994 at The Greenbrier and again in 1998 at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio, and earned over $4 million in her career. Green is a member of the Ohio Golf Hall of Fame. She was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.
