A tremendous all-around athlete who came to Marshall with an all-state resume in football, basketball and baseball at Clear Fork High School in Colcord, W.Va., Tex Williams’ athletic career was just getting started. On the basketball court, playing for Coach Jule Rivlin, Williams was Marshall’s top free throw shooter in the 1960-61 campaign. On the baseball field, Williams received All-Mid-American Conference honors as junior in 1960, batting .321 with four home runs and a team-leading 19 runs scored. Following his time at Marshall, Williams went on to coach at St. Albans (where the court is named for him) and Nitro high schools, at the University of Charleston and Alderson-Broaddus at the college level, and professionally for the Charleston Gunners of the Continental Basketball Association. He was named the 1975 West Virginia Coach of the Year by the state sportswriters association. Williams’ son, Adam, also played basketball at Marshall after winning the Evans Award as the state’s top high school player in the 2003-04 season at St. Albans. Williams was inducted into the University of Charleston Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993 and into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.
