Marshall Coach Jim Donnan didn’t have to go too far out of his way to recruit a quarterback who would help the Thundering Herd win a national championship, and a Southern Conference title – he simply recruited his son, Todd. The younger Donnan entered the record books early in his career when, as a freshman, he connected with Troy Brown on a 99-yard touchdown pass against VMI in 1991. As a sophomore, during Marshall’s run to the NCAA Division I-AA national title, Donnan was called upon when starter Michael Payton was injured in the first quarter of the quarterfinal matchup with Middle Tennessee State and threw three touchdown passes to spark a 35-21 win. The Norman, Okla., native took over as the full-time starter for his last two seasons, winning All-Southern Conference honors both years and was the league’s Offensive Player of the Year in 1994. In his career, Donnan passed for more than 7,000 yards and 61 touchdowns. As a senior, he also won the Buck Harless Award as Marshall’s Student-Athlete of the Year. Donnan was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.
