Tyrone "Ty" Collins
- Induction:
- 2014
- Class:
- 1973
Nobody in the history of Marshall basketball has made a higher percentage of his shots than Ty Collins. The 6-foot-3 guard made 58.7% of his career attempts, including an amazing 73.4% (163-of-222) as a senior in the 1972-73 season. In his three years as a member of the Marshall varsity, Collins helped the team to a 59-21 overall record, including a 23-4 mark and NCAA Tournament berth during the 1971-72 campaign, during which Marshall climbed to a school-best No. 8 national ranking. As a senior, Collins helped Marshall to another 20-win season and an appearance in the NIT. After completing his Marshall career, Collins returned to his native Paterson, N.J., where he served as a teacher and head boys’ basketball coach at his alma mater, John F. Kennedy High School, for 19 seasons (1977-96) until he tragically died in a drowning accident. The basketball court at Kennedy High School is now named in his honor. Collins was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.
