Marshall Tennis Dominates MAC Awards

4/27/2000

Cleveland, OH - The Mid-American Conference announced today that Marshall University's Laurie Mercer was named the MAC Tennis Coach-of-the-Year. In addition, Marshall's Anna Mitina and Ana Ceretto were each First-Team All-MAC selections.

Mercer, who is in her seventh season as Marshall's head coach, guided the Thundering Herd to its first ever MAC title this year as they finished the regular season with an 8-1 record in league play and the No. 1 seed in the conference's tournament. The Herd finished the season with an overall record of 18-6. This marks the second consecutive season that Mercer has been honored by the league. In the 1999 season, she was the MAC Co-Coach-of-the-Year, along with Miami's Ray Reppert.

"It is very nice to be recognized," said Head Coach Laurie Mercer. "This is an award I didn't receive by myself, it is a reflection of my team and coaching staff that makes me look good. This has all been done with an equal efforts from everyone."

Mitina, a sophomore from Sochi, Russia, earned First-Team All-MAC laurels for the second consecutive season. Mitina plays No. 1 singles for the Herd and finished the regular season with a 7-2 mark in league play.

Ceretto, a junior from Rosario, Argentina, plays in the No. 2 spot for Marshall and posted an 8-1 record in MAC action. This season, Mitina and Ceretto combined to play No. 1 doubles for Marshall, finishing the season with a 7-2 record in the MAC.

"Anytime you are recognized by your peers it lends itself additional credit. On behalf of the entire Athletic Department we are very proud of Laurie and her student athletes receiving these individual honors, said Athletic Director Lance West.
