Henderson Center (Nov. 7, 1999) -- Marshall's Toni Patillo scored 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to spark the Thundering Herd to a 57-54 win over Sports Reach in exhibition play on Sunday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center.
In addition to Patillo's 15 points, Marshall (1-0 in the preseason) also received 13 points from sophomore Au'Yana Ferguson and 11 points from junior Yaschico Stevens. Freshman Amy Reed chipped in with nine points and four rebounds.
"Toni Patillo is definately the player that makes our squad go," said third-year head coach Juliene Simpson. "We had moments today where I think we looked very good on defensive. I thought our offense would execute a little better, but I'm very happy with our performance."
Sports Reach was powered by Jay Barnes, a 6-0 forward who played collegiately at the University of Kentucky. Barnes scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down an amazing 22 rebounds. Tammy Bagby was the only other player from Sports Reach to reach double-figures as she scored 13 points.
Marshall is back in action again on Sunday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m. in the Henderson Center when the Herd hosts the AAU Cincinnati Stars in another exhibition game. The Thundering Herd tips-off the regular season on Nov. 23, as they travel to Youngstown State to take on the Penguins.
