Tennis Team Successful at Virginia Tech Fall Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va.- Three members of the Marshall Tennis team competed in the Virgina Tech Fall Invitational that was held this weekend in Blacksburg, VA.

In Flight A Singles, Alice Sukner loss in the semi-finals to Virginia Tech?s top seed. Kristen Stubbs defeated Sukner in the championship match, 7-5, 6-2. To make it to the finals, Sukner defeated Tammy Beaulie of Appalachain State, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1, in the first round. In the second round she defeted Teodora Doncheva of Campbell University, 6-3, 7-5, to make it to the finals.

Danielle Hock also competed in Flight A. In the first round Margie Zesinger of James Madison defeated Hock, 4-6, 7-6 (10), 6-3. In the second round Hock defeated Jessica Irey of East Tennessee, 6-3, 6-2. In the third round Katie Martzolf of Wake Forest defeated Hock, 6-2, 6-2.

Freshman, Ashley Kroh claimed the Flight B Championship. In the first round Kroh had a bye. In the second round she defeated Colen Gore of Campbell, 6-0, 6-0. Kroh defeated Petra Klimplova of Hampton, 6-1, 6-0. To claim the championship Kroh defeated Isabel Declercq of Campbell, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

The doubles competition was a single elimination competition. Sukner and Hock were defeated by Virgina Tech?s Ines Khelifi and Elena Bruner, 9-7. Kroh was teamed up with Elizabeth Proctor from Wake Forest. They won the first round by default. In the quarterfinal round Aimee Smith and Katie Martzolf of Wake Forest defeated the duo, 8-2.

Anna Mitina and Jessica Johnson will be competing in the All-American Tournament held in Riveria, Calif. October 6-14, 2001.
