Tennis Team Has Respectable Showing Against Top Players

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University tennis team finished the June Stewart Invitational Tournament at Vanderbilt this weekend with respectable showing.

In the last two days of the tournament Marshall made a good effort against top ranked players.

On Saturday in Singles-1 Jessica Johnson was defeated by Monika Schmidt (UAB), 6-2,6-2. On Sunday Johnson rebounded and defeated Rebecca Ho (PSU), 6-3, 6-3.

In Singles-2, Saturday, Melissa Igbal (Purdue) defeated Anna Mitina 6-2, 6-2. In Sunday's round, Kristen Nowicki (PSU) defeated Mitinia, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

Saturday, in Singles-4, Alice Sukner was defeated by Anna Savitskaya (Clemson), 2-6, 7-6, 6-2. Sukner won Sunday's match by receiveing a BYE.

Daniell Hock won the back draw of Singles-5. Hock defeated Shawna Zuccarini (Purdue) on Saturday, 7-5, 7-5. To claim 5th place, on Sunday she defeated Stacy Vernell (MTSU), 6-2, 6-3.

Ashley Kroh claimed third place in Singles-6. Ashley Robards (UT) defeated Kroh, 6-3, 7-5 on Saturday. On Sunday, Shannon Staford (UK) defeated Kroh, 6-4, 6-2.

In Singles-7, Leigh Ann Merryman defeated Meghan Skalsky, 6-4, 6-2. Danielle Petrisko (UK) defeated Joelle Good, 7-5, 6-0. Good and Skalsky were scheduled to compete on Sunday, but because of an illness Skalksy won the match by default.

In Singles-8, Olivia Hill was defeated by Whitney Collins (UK) on Saturday, 6-0, 6-0. On Sunday, Emily Vest (MTSU) defeated Hill, 6-0, 6-0.

The team will finish up their fall competition when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to compete in the East Regional Tournament.
