Tennis Player Jessica Johnson Shines at East Regional Championships

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Marshall University sophomore Jessica Johnson advanced to the Elite-Eight of the Omni Hotels East Regional Championships in Philadelphia after downing Lara Ercegovic of Temple in the tournament?s round of 16 Monday.

In Monday?s tennis action, Johnson advanced from the Sweet-Sixteen by defeating Lara Ercegovic (Temple), 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 and then dropped a hard fought battle to Courtney Bergman of Harvard, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfinals. At one point in the match, Johnson battle to match point, only to be overtaken by Ercegovic.

Johnson performance is Marshall?s best ever individual effort in the regional tournament. The Pittsburgh native and sister of Marshall head coach Laurie Mercer, advanced farther than any member of the Marshall Tennis team ever has.

In doubles action Anna Mitina and Johnson lost in the quarterfinals, 9-7, to Alexis Martire and Sonja Bajin of Harvard.

This was the last tennis tournament of the fall for Marshall. The Thundering Herd will open its spring schedule on January, 19 at the University of Kentucky. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
