Men's Basketball Adds Home Game With Arkansas-Monticello

10/9/2001

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University head basketball coach Greg White announced today that the Thundering Herd has added an additional home game for the 2001-2002 season. Marshall will play Arkansas-Monticello Wednesday, November 28 in the Cam Henderson Center at 7:30 p.m.

?With the NABC Classic in Lexington being an exempt tournament, we were allowed an additional game on our schedule and we wanted to take advantage of it,? said White. ?This game is a good fit for both of us and I appreciate coach Newell?s willingness to play.?

According to Marshall ticket manager Michael Carpenter, the UA-Monticello game is included in the season ticket package and season ticket prices are remaining the same.

UA-Monticello is an NCAA Division II school located in Monticello, Arkansas. First year head coach Mike Newell inherits a program that posted a 20-8 overall record last season. This season, UA-Monticello will open with seven consecutive games against Division-I competition. In addition to the Herd, the Boll Weevil?s will face UTEP, Providence, TCU, Oklahoma State, Louisiana Tech, and West Virginia.

Prior to taking over the UAM program, Mike Newell was head coach at Southern University at Shreveport-Bossier from 1996-2000 and spent last season as a regional scout for the Los Angeles Clippers. Newell coached at the University of Ark.-Little Rock from 1984 to 1990, guiding the Trojans to a record of 133-60 with three appearances in the NCAA Tournament and two trips to the NIT. The most memorable moment of Newell?s tenure at UALR may have come in the 1986 NCAA tournament when the Trojans upset 10th-ranked Notre Dame in the first round before losing in two overtimes to North Carolina State.

In a related note, the renewal deadline for Marshall basketball season ticket holders is Wednesday, October 10. Marshall?s home schedule features 13 games, including dates with Atlantic-10 member Massachussetts and Mid-American Conference powers Kent State, Ohio, Miami, and Central Michigan.
