11/14/2001
Huntington, W.Va.-Marshall head coach Greg White announced today that Cabell-Midland high school?s Mark Patton has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Thundering Herd.
?Mark is a perfect fit for us at Marshall,? White said. ?There is no question in my mind that he is the best player in West Virginia.?
Patton, a 6?9? 205 pound forward, is Marshall?s first signee of the signing period. He averaged 18.2 points per game as a junior for coach Jim Stewart?s Knights.
?He is an unselfish player that will make the extra pass,? Stewart said. ?He can dominate both ends of the floor. Even at 6?9? he can shoot from the perimeter and handle the ball well.?
Last season, Patton recorded 20 plus rebounds in several games. His best outing was 43 point, 21 rebound effort versus South Charleston.
?I really like the coaching staff at Marshall,? Patton said. ?It is close to home and I have grown up watching Marshall basketball.
Patton chose Marshall over such schools as West Virginia, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Xavier, Tulane and Wake Forest among others.
?I really like Marshall?s style of play,? Patton said. ?The players there are great and I feel really comfortable with all of them.?
The Cabell-Midland senior also boasts a 4.0 grade point average.
?I have loved Mark since the day I laid eyes on him at my camp,? White said. ?He brings numerous intangibles. He is a power forward who I envision becoming a small forward.?
The Thundering Herd expects to receive several more commitments throughout the signing period.
