11/17/2001

WASHINGTON -- Marshall cruised past South Carolina State, 62-48, in the consolation round of the AU Tip-Off Classic today as guard Ida Dotson (Tombstone, Ariz./Central Arizona C.C.) paced the Thundering Herd with 14 points. The Herd finished in third place in the tournament and move to 1-1 on the season.

Dotson went seven-of-11 from the floor and also contributed on defense with five steals and three defensive rebounds. Guard Melissa Arnold (Charleston, W.V./DuPont) also played solidly though 33 minutes, finishing with 12 points and four assists, while going five-of-six from the floor and shooting a perfect two-for-two from the free throw line.

Marshall led 34-21 at the half, and though South Carolina State nearly matched the Herd in scoring in the second period, the Bulldogs never overcame the first half deficit. Marshall went 42.9% from the floor compared to 29.6% by South Carolina State and made 14-of-20 free throw attempts as compared to five-of-13 by the Bulldogs. Forward Adeanah Pierce (San Antonio, Texas/University of Texas-San Antonio) led the Bulldogs in scoring with 15 points and also had eleven total rebounds.

The Herd's Ida Dotson was named to the All-Tournament team. The American Eagles had three representatives on the team (MVP Katryn Costenbader, Hollie Steinman, and Kaitlin Schuyler), Southern one (Jacklyn Winfield), and South Carolina State one (Adeanah Pierce).

Marshall heads to the west coast with a game on Thanksgiving night against Southern Utah in the Fresno State Classic. That game is scheduled to tip at 11 p.m. Eastern time.
