Women's Basketball Tops Salem International

11/8/2001

HUNTINGTON, W. Va.?Marshall University?s Ida Dotson scored a team-high 16 points to lead the Thundering Herd past Salem International 70-45 in women?s exhibition action Thursday night in the Hernderson Center.

?We played okay tonight, but I was impressed by the way we played in the last few minutes. I felt our press worked exceptionally well in the 2nd half.? said Coach Royce Chadwick, who posted his first win as Marshall?s coach. ?We made some adjustments to stop their spread offense, and I thought that turned out to be the difference in the game. It wasn?t real pretty, but I?d rather play ugly and win than play real pretty and lose.?

Dotson, a junior from Tombstone, Az., connected on six of 12 shots from the floor and recorded five assists. The 5-9 guard also tallied five rebounds and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line.

Salem was led by Kristen Self?s 19 points. The freshman from Dayton, Ohio, also recorded two assists and three boards for the Tigers.

Marshall?s other top performers were junior Amy Reed (Schuylkill Haven, Pa.) and sophomore Andrea Fitzgerald (Memphis, Ten.). Reed tallied a double-double on the night, scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Fitzgerald added 12 points in the winning effort.

The Thundering Herd will open regular season action on Friday, November16th, at the American University Tip-Off Classic in Washington, D.C. Marshall takes on the host Eagles at 7 p.m.
