RICHMOND, KY.--The Morehead State Lady Eagles (9-1) capitalized on 31 Marshall turnovers, 20 in the first half, to knock off the Thundering Herd, 80-68, in first round play at Eastern Kentucky?s Comfort Suites Classic. Marshall drops to 4-5 on the season.
?We dug ourselves a hole in the first half with the 20 turnovers, and it turned out to be a hole we couldn?t get out of,? said Marshall coach Royce Chadwick. ?Our team doesn?t have that sense of urgency with each possession, and with this team, every possession is of the utmost importance. Their pressure got to us in the first half because we lost our attacking mentality. Overall, we just didn?t play real well.?
Morehead took the lead at 11:33 mark in the first half on a made layup by DeVonda
Williams and never looked back. The Lady Eagles went on a 7-0 run at that point in the game, getting layups on Herd turnovers. The lead ballooned to 12 with 2:22 to go in the half, but Marshall went on a run of their own to cut Morehead?s lead to six, 36-30, at the break.
The Herd came within two points at the 17:40 mark in the second half, but never got any closer. Marshall once again shot a higher percentage from the floor (41.5% to 38.9%), the eighth time in nine games this season that feat has occurred. The Herd also out-rebounded their opponent by 12 rebounds (55-43). But, Morehead?s pressure full-court defense and the 31 turnovers eventually did in the Herd.
Marshall was led by Andrea Fitzgerald, who scored 20 points, and Ida Dotson, who notched her first double-double of her Marshall career with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Cassie Hackworth and Latae Cooley rounded out Herd scorers in double-figures with 11 points apiece.
The Lady Eagles? Travece Turnver led all scorers with 28 points. Tasha Gales added 21 points and 13 rebounds in the winning effort.
Marshall plays the host Colonels of Eastern Kentucky tomorrow afternoon to close out play at the Comfort Suites Classic. That game will tip at 4 p.m.
