Royce Chadwick Takes Over Women's Basketball Program
5/10/2001
Huntington, W.Va. - Marshall University Director of Athletics Lance West announced today that Royce Chadwick, one of the nation's most successful college basketball coaches, has been named head women's basketball coach at Marshall University.
"I can't tell you how happy I am about the new opportunities and the excitement I have for the program at Marshall," said Chadwick. "I believe we have a foundation for a very bright future and a nucleus for an outstanding basketball team."
Chadwick, 43, has spent the last seven seasons as head coach at Stephen F. Austin State University, where he established himself as one of the top collegiate coaches in the nation. During his tenure at SFA, Chadwick averaged 24.7 wins per season (79.7%), and led the Ladyjacks to seven consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Chadwick has an overall career record of 400-132 (75%).
Chadwick has signed a five-year contract that will pay him $90,000 per year.
"I had the pleasure of working with Royce at Stephen F. Austin State University," said Marshall University President Dan Angel. "Royce Chadwick is the right person to lead the Thundering Herd women's basketball team as we move Marshall University toward our goal of national prominence."
In 1996, the native of Floydada, Texas, led Stephen F. Austin to the NCAA's Sweet 16. He has also led the Ladyjacks to seven Southland Conference Tournament Titles, while compiling a conference record of 128-14.
"We are ecstatic to have such a qualified and proven leader for our women's basketball program," said West. "We look forward to achieving national prominence with the Thundering Herd women's program."
Prior to Stephen F. Austin, Chadwick coached five years at Howard College, three years at Sam Houston State University, and two years at Panhandle State (Okla.).
Chadwick earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting and math from Southwestern Oklahoma State in 1980 and later earned a master's degree in business education from that school in 1982.
Chadwick and his wife Lisa have two daughters Kasi (13) and Kelsi (10).
