Tamar Slay Named to Wooden Award Preseason All-America Team

8/3/2001

Tamar Slay has been named to the John R. Wooden Preseason All-America Team.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Los Angeles Athletic Club announced today that Marshall University guard Tamar Slay has been elected to the 2001-2002 John R. Wooden Award Top-50 Preseason Candidates List.

?This is a tremendous honor for Tamar and our basketball program for him to be selected as one of the pre-season candidates for the John Wooden Award,? said Marshall Head Coach Greg White. ?Tamar is very deserving to be mentioned with these great players and has worked extremely hard to get to this point.?

The preseason Top 50 candidates were selected based on a national poll conducted by the John R. Wooden Award Committee. Candidates were selected based on last year?s individual performance and team records. The student-athletes selected are all returning players; transfers and first-time players are not included.

Four 2000-2001 Wooden Award All-Americans head the preseason list (Jason Williams of Duke, Casey Jacobsen of Stanford, Tayshaun Prince of Kentucky and Frank Williams of Illinois). The defending NCAA National Championship team, Duke University,
placed the most candidates on the 2001-2002 Wooden Award Preseason Candidates List with four (Carlos Boozer, Chris Duhon, Mike Dunleavy, Jr. and Jason Williams)

Slay, a six-foot-nine guard from Beckley, W.Va., helped the Thundering Herd to an 18-9 record last season by averaging 16.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. The Marshall senior is currently one of 16 finalists for the United States? 2001 World University Games Team that will represent the USA in the World University Games in Beijing, China later this month.

Slay was the only player from the Mid-American Conference or West Virginia to be named to the prestigious list.

On Tuesday March 26, 2002, the ten-player Wooden Award All-American Team
will be announced. One member of the Wooden Award All-American Team will be selected on Sunday April 7, 2002 as the recipient of the Wooden Award Trophy as the nation?s ?Most Outstanding Collegiate Basketball Player of the Year.? The event will be a one hour telecast on FOX Sports Net. In late December, the Wooden Award committee will release the Midseason Top 30 during a half-hour program on FOX Sports Net.
