Tennis Team Has Good Showing in First Fall Competition

Williamsburg, Va. - Several players had good showings today as the Marshall University women?s tennis team opened its fall season at the Ninth Annual William & Mary Invitational.

In Flight A singles competition Thundering Herd sophomore Jessica Johnson and senior Anna Mitina both lost close matches as Johnson fell 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (2) to Maryland?s Delila Causevic and Mitina lost 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 to W&M?s Jessyca Arthur.

In Flight C singles sophomore Alice Sukner defeated Maryland?s Chloe Chavardes 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 and freshman Danielle Hock topped Boston College?s Emily Yeomans 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Joelle Good defeated Morgan Landes of Boston College 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 and freshman Ashley Kroh beat W&M?s Kelley Kennedy 6-1, 6-3 in Flight D singles. Sophomore Meghan Skalsky had a good showing as well as she topped Pennsylvania?s Brandi Washington 6-3, 6-4.

The Thundering Herd Kept up its good showing as Mitina and Sukner joined to defeat W&M?s Lena Sherbakov and Amy Wei 8-5 in the first round of Flight A doubles. Hock and Johnson also won in Flight A as they topped Lara Ercegovic and Danira Penic of Temple 8-4.

Mitina and Sukner went on to defeat Wakeforest?s Maren Haus and Aimee Smith 8-5 in the quarterfinals and Hock and Johson fell to Wake Forest?s Janet Bergman and Bea Bielik 8-1.

In Flight B doubles Good teamed with Virgina?s Tech?s Ines Khelifi to defeat Maryland?s Chavardes and Emily DeCamilla 8-5. Kroh and Skalsky fell to Pennsylvania?s Linda Leibfarth and Nicole Ptak 8-5.

Good and Kelifi went on to defeat Leibfrath and Ptak 8-5 in the quarterfinals and Kroh and Skalsky fell 8-2 to Chavardes and DeCamilla in the consolation round.

Competition continues tomorrow with quarterfinal and semifinal rounds in singles in the morning and a doubles round in the afternoon.
