Herd To Provide "Community Unity" On Saturday

9/25/2001

Marshall University President Dan Angel and Director of Athletics Lance West today announced the university will initiate a ?Community Unity? effort through a series of events and tributes before and during Saturday's home football game with Mid-American Conference opponent Bowling Green.

Marshall will pay tribute to the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks and their loved ones during halftime of the game, which begins at 7 p.m. at Marshall Stadium. Angel said he hopes Thundering Herd fans will ?fill the stadium,? not only to watch Marshall and the Falcons play, but to show their patriotism during this time of national tragedy.

"This tragedy has affected everyone and I think all of us want to continue to help in some way," Angel said. "By coming together as a community this Saturday, we can show that we are not going to intimidated by these terrorist attacks, and that we will congregate anytime we want to. At the same time, we want to honor those who stand in harm?s way, those who protect us everyday.?

To do so, Marshall will admit all uniformed military, law enforcement, fire and emergency medical personnel to the game free, and accompanying family members may purchase tickets upon entry to the stadium at a special reduced rate of $5 each. Uniformed personnel and their families wishing to take advantage of this special offer must enter the stadium at Gate C near the stadium?s southwest corner. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.

Baruch Whitehead, director of the Marshall University Marching Thunder, said the band is putting together a patriotic halftime program that will salute our men and women in uniform. Bowling Green?s band also will perform at halftime.

Also, the first 30,000 fans entering the stadium will receive a free American Flag lapel pin.

Marshall will take a 1-1 record into the game. The Herd has not played since Sept. 8, when it defeated the University of Massachusetts, 49-20, at home. Bowling Green is 3-0.
