HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University Men?s Basketball Coach Greg White announced the Thundering Herd?s 2001-2002 schedule today.
?We are excited about this year?s schedule,? White said. ?Our home schedule with UMass, Central Michigan, Miami, Akron, Kent State, Ohio and the rest of the MAC schedule should create a lot of excitement in the Henderson Center and our road contests will present both challenges and opportunities.?
The Thundering Herd?s regular season gets underway on November 15 opposite George Washington University in the National Association of Basketball Coaches? (NABC) Classic in Lexington, Ky.
?The opportunity to open against George Washington in Rupp Arena with a matchup with Kentucky or Western Kentucky will certainly be a challenge, but its one we are looking forward too,? White said.
Marshall?s schedule also features a tilt with SEC power Auburn at the Coors Classic Basketball Invitational in Mobile, Ala., a home contest with Atlantic-10 member Massachusetts, and the annual battle with West Virginia University in Charleston.
The Herd will also face Troy State, Winthrop, and Radford in non-conference action, before entering the Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule. This season, Marshall will host Northern Illinois, Kent State, Eastern Michigan, Buffalo, Ball State, Akron, Miami, Ohio, and Central Michigan in MAC play.
Game times have not been set, due to television considerations.
Marshall returns three starters from last year?s 18-9 squad, including seniors Tamar Slay and J.R. VanHoose. Slay, a 6-9 shooting guard, is among the 50 players selected to the Wooden Award Watch List, while VanHoose, a 6-10 forward/center, ranks among the nation?s leaders in rebounds and ?double-doubles.?
