Women's Basketball Falls to Western Michigan
1/12/2002
Huntington, W. Va.-The Marshall women?s basketball team fell to 0-4 in Mid-American Conference play, 4-10 overall, with a 71-52 loss to the Western Michigan Broncos (6-10, 3-1) Saturday evening at the Henderson Center.
?Ida and Mel (Melissa Arnold) played well on the offensive end,? said Marshall head coach Royce Chadwick. ?We had no low-post presence tonight. We fought back, and when we got it to two, we had a defensive lapse, and that hurt us. We let them get in a comfort zone, and they took it from there.?
The Broncos (6-10, 3-1 MAC) opened the game on a 5-0 run and looked to be in control. Marshall hung close for the first six minutes, and even led the game, 10-9, with 15:38 to go in the half. A 10-2 run in the next four minutes gave WMU a 19-12 lead, and by the end of the half, Western Michigan?s lead had stretched to 13, 39-26.
The Herd made it interesting, however, in the second half, when Marshall went on a 10-0 run, holding the Broncos scoreless for the first 6:20 of the second period, to make the score 41-39. Western Michigan responded with a game-breaking 20-6 run of their own to give the Broncos their third MAC win in four tries.
Marshall was led by Ida Dotson (Tombstone, Ariz.) who had an impressive outing, scoring 19 points on 8 of 14 shooting from the floor. Senior Melissa Arnold (Charleston, W.Va.) also had her best game of the year, scoring 12 points, with all 12 coming from behind the three-point arc.
Mid-American Conference play continues for the Herd next week as they head to Mt. Pleasant, Mich., to take on the Chippewas of Central Michigan on Tuesday, January 15th at 7:00 p.m.
