Women's Basketball Drops MAC Contest to Kent State

1/19/2002

Huntington, W.Va.- The Marshall women?s basketball team dropped to 5-11, 1-5 in conference play Saturday evening in the Henderson Center, falling to the Kent State Golden Flashes, (8-9, 4-2 MAC) 59-39. The 39 points scored was the lowest offensive output for the Herd all season.

The Golden Flashes, limited to only seven scholarship players, rallied behind an eight-point performance by Christi Shibata to take a 31-21 lead into the half. Kent shot 45.8% (11-24) from the floor in the half, compared to only 32% (8-25) for the Herd. However, Marshall improved on its MAC-leading rebounding margin, outrebounding KSU 22-12. Individually, Ida Dotson (Tombstone, Ariz.) led Marshall with seven points.

The second half saw the Golden Flashes open their lead to twenty on multiple occasions, capitalizing on Marshall?s 23 turnovers and the Herd?s inability to put the ball in the basket (33.3%). Kent State, picked to win the MAC Western Division, were paced by Kate Miller, who scored a game high 15 points.

The Thundering Herd were led by Ida Dotson, who scored nine points. Andrea Fitzgerald (Memphis, Ten.) added eight for Marshall.

Marshall?s next game is against intra-state rival West Virginia University in Charleston next Wednesday, January 23rd. That game tips off at 5:30 p.m.
