Falcons Fly Past Herd
1/26/2002
BOWLING GREEN, OHIO--The Marshall University women's basketball team (5-13, 1-6 MAC) dropped a 76-52 decision to the Bowling Green Falcons (6-13, 3-5 MAC) Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Arena.
"You have to give Bowling Green a lot of credit for doing such a great job playing defense and for doing the things that they do well," said Marshall coach Royce Chadwick. "They did a great job of keeping us from scoring early and not letting up."
The Falcons never trailed in the game, and after Marshall cut BGSU's lead to three at 13-10 with 14:09 to play in the first half, Bowling Green sprinted to what became an easy victory. The Falcons went on a 13-0 run soon thereafter, their largest of the season, while keeping the Herd off of the scoreboard for almost eight minutes. By the half, BGSU's lead had expanded to 18, 44-26.
In the second half, Marshall never got closer than 18 points.
The Falcons were led by Stefanie Wenzel, who put together her first double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Kim Griech poured in 14, while Dana Western-Schuka added 11.
The lone bright spot on an otherwise dismal evening was junior Ida Dotson, who scored a career-high 22 points. To begin the game, the Tombstone, Ariz., native, scored 16 out of the team's first 19 points in an amazing effort. Andrea Fitzgerald (Memphis, Ten.) was the only other Herd player in double-figures with 14.
Marshall continues MAC play with a road contest at the Akron Zips on Wednesday, January 30th. That game is slated for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
