Marshall Women Cut Down By Ohio In Double Overtime

1/9/2002

Huntington, W. Va.--The Marshall women?s basketball team (4-9, 0-3) dropped their sixth game in a row in double overtime to the Ohio Bobcats (7-6, 2-0), 80-73, Wednesday evening at the Henderson Center.

The Herd trailed by ten, 25-15, at the half, but came out on a 16-6 run to take their first lead of the game, 33-31, at the 9:34 mark in the second half. The game see-sawed back and forth, and with 19 seconds to go in regulation, Marshall led by three, 54-51. Ohio knocked down two free throws with ten seconds to go to cut the lead to one, and after Ida Dotson (Tombstone, Ariz.) made only 1-of-2 from the line, Bobcat senior Cathy Szall made a running layup with three seconds remaining to send the game into overtime tied at 55. At the end of regulation, Marshall had two of its post players, Catie Knable (Floyd Knobs, Ind.) and Latae Cooley (North Versailles, Pa.) foul out of the game. Fouls were the deciding factor on the night, as Ohio attempted 21 more free throws (48-27) than the home-standing Herd.

The first overtime session began like many games have begun this year for Marshall, as Ohio took an early four-point lead, 59-55. Once again, the Herd fought back, and at the 1:06 mark, Ida Dotson?s made layup tied the game at 61. A free throw battle ensued for the next minute, and with 11 seconds left, Ida Dotson made 1-of-2 free throws to make the score 66-64. Again, as time expired, the Bobcats responded, this time when senior Lori Moorman knocked in two of her game-high 22 points with four seconds to go to send the game into another overtime. By the end of the first overtime, Marshall?s other two post players, Amy Reed (Schuykill Haven, Pa.) and Au?Yana Ferguson (Louisville, Ky.) had fouled out of the game, leaving the Herd with only two post players, both of which had seen limited minutes on the night.

Ohio took advantage of Marshall?s foul trouble and lack of depth to put the game away in the second overtime. The Bobcats scored the first two points of the second overtime and never looked back, outscoring Marshall 14-7 in the deciding period.

The Bobcats were led by Moorman?s 21, Andrea Gay?s 20 points, and Cathy Szall?s 12. Candace Bates also bagged a game-high 12 rebounds.

Marshall rode the back of junior Ida Dotson, who tallied 20 points. Andrea Fitzgerald (Memphis, Ten.) was the only other Herd player in double-figures with 17. Au?Yana Ferguson and Amy Reed led Marshall on the boards with nine rebounds apiece.

The Herd remain at home this weekend when they suit up for game one of a doubleheader with the men. That game is against Western Michigan, and it tips off at 5 p.m.
