Johnson Leads The Way For Marshall At Penn Tournament

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.?Marshall University?s women?s tennis player Jessica Johnson and junior Alice Sukner led the way for the Thundering Herd this weekend at the Cissie Leary Invitational at the University of Pennsylvania.

Johnson made it to the round of 16 before falling to fifth-seed Susanna Lingman of Harvard (6-4, 7-5). In her first round match, Johnson defeated Michelle Yeh of Pennsylvania in straight sets (6-2, 6-1). In the round of 32, Johnson defeated Texas A&M?s Lauren Walker (6-1, 6-2) before falling to Lingman.

Sukner last her opening round match to Biffy Kaufman of Yale (6-0, 6-0) before making a strong run in the consolation bracket. Sukner made it to the consolation semifinals before falling to Temple?s Lara Ercegovic (6-2, 6-4). On her way to the semifinals, Sukner defeated Halley Rambally of Texas A&M (4-6, 6-4, 1-0); Lindsay Bryan of Ohio State (7-6, 7-6) and Ashley Hedberg of Texas A&M (6-3, 6-1).

The doubles team of Sukner and Lille Nzudie fell in both doubles matches. In their first match, Sukner and Nzudie fell to Eva Wang and Melissa Anderson of Harvard 8-6. In the opening round of the consolation bracket, Sukner and Nzudie fell to Ashley Hedberg and Jessica Roland of Texas A&M 8-6.

At the Virginia Tech Tournament, freshman Holley Asel won the back draw of the lower bracket, defeating Meredith Vincent of Virginia Tech in the final (6-3, 6-3). Sophomore Danielle Hock made it into the quarterfinals of the upper bracket before falling to second-seeded Jennifer Tuchband of Virginia 6-0, 6-1).

The Marshall tennis team moves on to the All-American Tournament in Los Angeles, Ca. Oct. 5-10.
