HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall fans were treated to an exciting night of high-flying action at the annual Thursday Night Thunder in the Cam Henderson Center Thursday.
A crowd of 2,257 showed up for the event that featured both the Thundering Herd men?s and women?s basketball teams in abriviated scrimmages and fan-favorite events, such as, a three-point shooting contest and a slam dunk contest.
In the co-ed three-point shoot out senior Ida Dotson teamed with junior Ronald Blackshear to score 22 points in only 35 seconds and win the event. Following that contest, Marshall forward David Anderson recieved one of the night?s biggest ovations by sealing the slam dunk championship with an impressive wind-mill dunk that resulted in the Puerto Rico native jamming his entire arm through the net and hanging on the rim, while continuing to palm the ball with one hand, while his elbow rested on the rim.
The highlight of the night was Marshall?s abreviated Green-White scrimmage, which featured an impressive performance from newcomer Marvin Black. The six-foot-eight junior college transfer dominated the glass, especially on the offensive end, bringing down a scrimmage-high six rebounds. The Cleveland, Ohio, native also added 10 points. Preseason All-MAC selection Ronald Blackshear scored five points in the contest.
Oak Hill native Monty Wright scored 13 points for the green team and helped his squad to a 30-29 win in the abbreviated scrimmage that last 20 minutes with a running clock.
?We?ve only had about six workouts, so we are still in the beginning stages of installing our offense...we've installed some schemes, but we haven't installed our fast break yet,? head coach Greg White said. ?You can tell that Marvin has played more basketball than most of the guys out there. We knew that we would get that out of him.?
Nearly every member of the team took part in the scrimmage, the lone exception being freshman LeVar Carter who missed the event due to a night class.
Marshall will return to the practice courts and continure preparation for its upcoming season. The Herd is slated to open the season with an exhibition game against WorldWide Basketball on November 7th at 7:30 p.m.
