Tennis Opens Play at June Stewart Invitational

Nashville, Tenn.-The Marshall University women?s tennis team started play at the June Stewart Invitation hosted by Vanderbilt University on Friday, October 18. Four Thundering Herd players are playing in this weekend?s tournament.
In the Flight One singles bracket, Jessica Johnson opened with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Sarah Witten of Kentucky. However, Johnson rebounded with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Gretchen Haynor of Purdue University.
Johnson, the Thundering Herd?s top ranked player, came into the weekend after participating in the All-American Tournament where she lost to Maureen Diaz of Southern California 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 and Eva Wang of Harvard 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
In the Flight Two singles bracket, Alice Sukner opened with a loss to Nathalie Roelss (Kentucky) 6-2, 6-3. However, like Johnson, Sukner was able to pick up a victory in her second match as she defeated Maaria Husain of Pennsylvania 7-5, 6-1.
Danielle Hock opened the tournament with two consecutive wins in Flight Five singles bracket. In the opening round she defeated Claudia Farace of Tennessee 6-1, 6-4 and followed with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 victory over Shannon Stafford of Kentucky.
Finally, in the Flight Six singles bracket, Holly Asel opened with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Shannon Stough of Kentucky before defeating Ashlea Bowen 6-2, 6-3 in the consolation bracket.
Play at the tournament will continue today with singles and doubles matches. Marshall?s top doubles team of Johnson and Sukner will look to continue their good play after a strong showing at the All-American Tournament where they defeated Purdue 8-3 before falling to 16th ranked California 8-6.
