Women's Tennis Wraps Up Play at June Stewart Invitational

Nashville, Tenn.-The Marshall University women?s tennis team wrapped up play on Sunday, October 20, at the June Stewart Invitational hosted by Vanderbilt University. The day was highlighted by a third place finish by the doubles team of Alice Sukner and Danielle Hock in the Flight Three Doubles bracket.

Sukner and Hock opened with a victory over Nieto and Gunn of Georgia Tech, winning the match 8-6. The team lost their semi-final match to Purdue University 8-2, but rebounded for a third-place finish with a 9-8 victory over Schenek and Grant of Georgia Tech.

Consolation singles play also continued for the Thundering Herd. The Thundering Herd?s top player, Jessica Johnson, was defeated in the consolation final of the Flight One singles bracket by Tammy Encina of Tennessee 6-2, 7-6.

In the Flight Two singles bracket, Sukner defeated Brittany Reitz of Purdue 4-3 after Reitz retired with the injury. The victory gave Sukner a fifth-place finish in the bracket.

In the final of the Flight Five singles bracket, Hock was defeated by Missy Wright of Purdue 6-3, 6-4 and earned the second-place finish.

Holly Asel also advanced to the consolation final of the Flight Six bracket, however, she was defeated by Shawna Zuccarini of Purdue 6-0, 6-0.

Marshall will now move on to the Omni Hotels East Regional to be held in Boston, Mass., on October 26-29.
