Marshall Women Open Season With 20-Point Drubbing Of American
11/22/2002
Huntington, W. Va.--The Marshall University women?s basketball team opened the 2002-03 campaign with a 76-56 win over the American University Eagles. The win avenged an 89-87 overtime loss to the Eagles last year in Washington, D.C.
?I felt that we played well in spurts tonight when we were aggressive,? said head coach Royce Chadwick. ?We got in foul trouble in the first half, but came out in the second half strong. That strong performance won the game for us.?
American held their first and only lead at 2-0 before an 11-2 Thundering Herd run to knock the Eagles out of the game. MU?s lead ballooned to as many as 18 in the first half.
Despite early foul trouble, Marshall kept the pressure on the visitors from Washington, D.C., as they went on a 14-0 spurt midway through the second half to push the Herd lead to 29 at 68-39. American did not have one player score in double-figures.
Senior center Amy Reed led all scorers with 22 points, many of which came during the 14-point run in the second half. Cassie Hackworth poured in 20, and newcomer Christina Harbin had seven points, nine rebounds, and 12 assists in Marshall?s best all-around effort.
American?s best game came from Maria Werries, who had nine points.
The Herd play for the Fifth Third Bank MU Classic championship tomorrow night at 8 p.m. against Georgia Southern, who defeated Florida Atlantic 75-57 in the 6 p.m. game. FAU will take on American tomorrow evening at 6 p.m.
