12/1/2002

Huntington, W. Va.--A 16-3 Eastern Kentucky (2-2) run to start the second half turned a 40-40 halftime tie into an EKU blowout, as the Lady Colonels cruised to a 95-73 win over the Thundering Herd (2-2) Sunday afternoon in the Cam Henderson Center.

?We just didn?t get the leadership we needed today,? said Marshall coach Royce Chadwick. ?They pressed us all night and we just couldn?t find an answer when we needed it.?

Senior Amy Reed (Schuykill Haven, Pa.) made the score 40-38 on a made layup with 1:06 to go in the first stanza to give the Herd their last lead of the contest. EKU?s Teresa McNair? jumper 18 seconds later knotted the score at 40 heading into the break. The score was tied 13 times in the game?s first 20 minutes, and the lead changed hands eight times in a tightly contested first half of play.

The aforementioned 16-3 run by the Lady Colonels knocked the wind out of the homestanding Herd, and for the rest of the game, Marshall never got their breath again. Marshall cut the EKU lead to eight with 9:43 to go in the game, but a 12-3 run in the next four minutes put the game away for Eastern Kentucky.

Marshall was led by Ida Dotson, who scored 18 points, Cassie Hackworth, who added 16, and Amy Smith, who scored 14. Smith also added a game-high 11 rebounds for MU.

EKU had five players in double-figures, led by Teresa McNair, who had a team-high 17 points and ten rebounds.

Marshall travels to Morehead, Kentucky, to take on Morehead State on Wednesday night. Tip-off is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
