Marvin Black Earns MAC Player of the Week Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Marshall's Marvin Black (East Division) and Northern Illinois' P.J. Smith and Western Michigan's Robby Collum (West Division) were selected as winners of the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week award for the fifth week of the 2002-2003 season. The league office will select a player of the week from both divisions each week throughout the 2002-03 season.

Black becomes the second Thundering Herd player to capture the honor this season. Junior Ronald Blackshear was named MAC East Player of the Week in the opening week of the season.

Averaged 21.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game as Marshall lost to Morehead State 101-100 in overtime and beat Western Carolina 83-68. At MSU, Black recorded 20 points and 11 rebounds, as well as adding a blocked shot and an assist. Versus the Catamounts, Black had 23 points (shooting 10-of-11 from the field) and 10 rebounds.

MAC West Division Player of the Week
P.J. Smith, Northern Illinois
(Jr., G, Maywood, Ill.)
Scored a career-high 35 points, shooting 14-of-18 from the field, in an 84-83 loss at South Florida and followed with 16 points in a 72-65 win at Illinois State. Smith's 14 field goals versus USF were the most by a Huskie player since 1984 and he also grabbed 7 rebounds in that contest. He averaged 25.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game on the week.

Robby Collum, Western Michigan
(Sr., G, Racine, Wisc.)
Sparked the Broncos' two wins with just four turnovers in 65 minutes of action and by averaging 16.5 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds. WMU defeated SEC member Auburn, 72-54, on the road, and followed with a triumph over Big East foe Virginia Tech, 75-54, at home. Collum was 9-of-17 (52.9%) from the floor and 12-of-15 (80.0%) from the line. His 17 points at Auburn led the team and he did not have any turnovers in the victory over Virginia Tech.
