Miami Takes Out Herd

2/2/2002

Huntington, W.Va.- The Marshall University women?s basketball team (6-14, 2-7 MAC) dropped a 79-49 decision to the Miami Redhawks (12-9, 6-4 MAC) Saturday afternoon in the Henderson Center. The Herd committed 27 turnovers and shot only 29.8% from the field.

?We had 19 offensive rebounds and 17 field goals, which is pretty much the story of the game,? said Marshall coach Royce Chadwick. ?We got the ball two feet from the basket, and bless our hearts, we couldn?t put it in the goal.?

After the Herd took a 1-0 lead to start the game, the Redhawks went on an 8-0 run, capitalizing on three Marshall turnovers during that span. For the game, Miami scored 29 points on MU turnovers. Marshall cut the lead to 10-7 on an Au?Yana Ferguson (Louisville, Ky.) layup, but that was as close as the Herd would get for the rest of the game, as the Redhawks promptly went on a 10-2 run to put the homestanding Herd in their rear-view mirror. The lead was 12 at the half (34-22), and ballooned to 30, the final winning margin for Miami. The Redhawk win snapped a four-game losing streak.

The Redhawks were led by MAC-leading scorer Heather Cusick and Kim Smith, who each poured in 19 points. Jana Butler and Colleen Day also scored in double-digits, adding ten points apiece.

The Herd were led by Ferguson, who scored nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Andrea Fitzgerald (Memphis, Ten.) also tallied nine points, while the team?s leading scorer, Ida Dotson (Tombstone, Ariz.), was held to only eight points.

Marshall travels to Ohio for a game against the Bobcats this Thursday night. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
