RedHawks Take Out Herd, 67-45
2/20/2002
OXFORD, OHIO--The Marshall University women?s basketball team (8-17, 4-10 MAC) dropped a 67-45 decision to the Miami RedHawks (15-10, 9-5 MAC) Tuesday evening at Millett Hall. The Herd have now lost ten in a row to Miami.
?We can?t play like the way we did and expect to beat a good team like Miami,? said Marshall coach Royce Chadwick. ?We had some good looks at the basket but we couldn?t get them to go for us. We just didn?t play with intensity to beat a good team...you have to be prepared every single night to win games in late February.?
Marshall jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the game behind early starts by junior Ida Dotson (Tombstone, Ariz.) and senior Au?Yana Ferguson (Louisville, Ky.). Ferguson, who tallied her fifth double-double on the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds, passed Toni Patillo for tenth place on the all-time rebounding list at Marshall.
Miami responded with a spurt of their own for the next six minutes, going on an 18-2 run to give the RedHawks an 18-9 lead. Marshall hung around for the rest of the half, and by the break, Miami led the Herd, 28-22.
In the second half, Miami controlled play from the outset, scoring seven unanswered points and together a 14-2 run to put the Herd away. The RedHawk lead expanded to as many as 25 with a little over four minutes to go in the game.
Miami was led by Kim Lancaster, who scored 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Melanie Koslowski poured in 12, while Beth Roederer and Heather Cusick added 11 and 10, respectively.
The Herd were led by Ferguson and Dotson, who scored 12 points apiece. Dotson has scored in double-figures for Marshall in 20 of 25 games this year.
Marshall stays on the road for a matchup with Western division-leading Toledo this Saturday. Tip time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
