Ohio Sweeps Regular Season Series From Herd
2/7/2002
ATHENS, OHIO--The Marshall University women?s basketball team (6-15, 2-8 MAC) were overcome by the hot-shooting Ohio Bobcats (10-11, 5-5 MAC), 77-67, Thursday evening at the Convocation Center. OU was an impressive 26-for-45 (57.8%) from the floor, and 7-for-17 (41.2%) from three-point land.
However, the Herd also played one of their best games of the season, as four Marshall players scored in double-figures. Marshall outrebunded the Bobcats, 34-33, had eight fewer turnovers (17-9), and posted their best free-throw shooting percentage of the year (83.3%) Thursday night. The difference in the game ended up being poor field goal shooting for Marshall, especially from Herd guards, who made only 12 shots in 44 attempts (27%).
?Ohio played very well tonight, they did an outstanding job of shooting the ball,? said Marshall coach Royce Chadwick. ?Our goal was to be more aggressive, but they hit some big-time shots to keep our aggression in check.?
After a quick two by Ida Dotson (Tombstone, Ariz.) to make the score 2-0 in the opening four seconds of the game, the Herd never saw the lead again. Marshall tied the game for the last time at 12 with 13:32 left in the first half, and after a 15-5 run started by the Bobcats two minutes later, MU trailed Ohio, 32-23, with three minutes to go in the half. The Herd cut the lead to four, 35-31, at the break.
Marshall opened the scoring in the second half on a made jumper by Amy Reed (Schuykill Haven, Pa.) to cut the OU lead to two, but again, the Bobcats put together a run to keep the visitors at arms length. After six unanswered points, OU led Marshall 41-35 with just under 17 minutes to go in regulation. MU would get no closer than six points the rest of the way, as the hot-shooting Bobcats used a 63.2% second half shooting percentage to propel them to a ten-point victory.
The Herd?s got exceptional play from senior Au?Yana Ferguson (Louisville, Ky.), who tallied a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 boards. Andrea Fitzgerald (Memphis, Tenn.) led Marshall in the scoring column, pouring in 16 points. Dotson added 14, while Reed chipped in 12.
Ohio was led by seniors Cathy Szall and Lori Moorman, who scored 19 and 17, respectively. Andrea Gay added 13, and Candace Bates helped out with 10 points in the winning effort.
Marshall returns home to the Henderson Center this weekend when they take on the Eastern Michigan Eagles. Tip-time is set for 1 p.m.
