Tennis Closes Regular Season with Decisive Win Over Huskies

HUNTINGTON, W.Va- The Marshall University tennis team soundly defeated MAC opponent, Northern Illinois with a 7-0 victory today at the Marshall University Tennis Courts.

Marshall posts a regular season record of 18-7 and 8-1 in the MAC. The Huskies fall to 12-9 and 6-3 in the MAC.

Anna Mitina was honored today as she played her final regular season. Today she picked up her 190th win at No. 2 singles.

Even after a slow start in the doubles play, the Herd was able to clinch two of the three to take the doubles point. Mitina and Lille Nzudie were defeated by Branka Savic and Erica Heshelman in an 8-3 loss at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 Jessica Johnson and Ashely Kroh grabbed the lead and defeated Molly Opel and Kris Tiedt 8-2. The Herd clinched the doubles point with a win from Alice Sukner and Danielle Hock at No. 3 doubles.

In singles the Herd picked up the pace and won all six singles matches. The first win came from Mitina posting a score of 6-1, 6-3 over Tanja Sukovic. She was followed by a win from Nzudie at the No. 4 position putting the Herd ahead 3-0.

Joelle Good came through to help the Herd clinch the match. Good rallied with Kris Tiedt in the first set posting a 6-4 win and then took control and finished her off 6-2 in the second. At the No. 1 position, Johnson defeated Savic in a long two set match. Johnson posted a win of 6-3, 7-5. Marshall also got a wins from Kroh and Sukner.

Up next, the Herd will head to Muncie, Ind. to compete in the MAC Championship Tournament on April 25-28.
