Marshall Tabs Clifton Waterbury New Diving Coach
5/22/2002
Huntington, W.Va.--Marshall University has hired Clifton Waterbury as its new diving coach, announced Wednesday by Leonard Kraus, the Herd?s Head Swimming and Diving coach.
?Cliff is a very young, energetic, and outgoing person who we hope will be around for a long time to help put Marshall Swimming and Diving on the map,? said Kraus. ?He was a very good diver on the collegiate level, and with his excellent communication skills, he should be able to help out our young divers as they compete and adapt to Division I competition.?
Waterbury comes to Marshall from Gustavus Adolphus College, a Divison III college in St. Peter, Minnesota, where he spent three years as the Head Diving Coach. While there, he oversaw all aspects of the men?s and women?s diving teams and led his teams to considerable success. His 2002 men?s and women?s teams were Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions, and in 2000, his men?s team claimed a MIAC title. He coached five All-MIAC performers and five NCAA qualifiers.
A native of Lincoln, Nebraska, Waterbury is very excited to be the diving caoch at Marshall University.
"I am very excited to be the new diving coach at Marshall," said Waterbury. ?I am looking forward to building a strong program with head swim coach Leonard Kraus.''
Before his stint at Gustavus Aldolphus College, Waterbury was the head diving coach at Lincoln Northeast High School from 1994-1999. In 1999, he coached a men?s state champion and an All-American performer, while also earning recognition as having the men?s and women?s diving teams of the year in ?99.
This past summer, he was the Camp Director/Assistant Diving Coach at the Cane Aquatics Swimming and Diving Camps on the campus of the University of Miami (Fla.), a world reknown swimming and diving camp. Waterbury worked with Randy Ableman, Miami?s legendary diving coach who has been named the NCAA Coach of the Year nine times while also working with three U.S. Olympic Teams. Waterbury also had the opportunity to coach several international Olympic divers and the NCAA 10-meter National Champion.
Waterbury received his undergraduate degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato, in 2001.
