Women's Basketball Releases 2002-03 Schedule

8/12/2002

Huntington, W.Va.--Marshall University women?s basketball coach Royce Chadwick released his 2002-03 schedule today, a gauntlet that will include a December tournament in the Bahamas with Ole Miss, Clemson, and Oakland University on the 20th and 21st and the Herd?s own tournament on November 22-23rd.

The second-year head coach definitely sees an upgrade in opponents from last season.

?Our schedule is ten times tougher than it was last year's, so we probably won't post the wins right away that we're all hoping for,? said Chadwick. ?But it should be fun. Thanks to Fifth Third Bank, Ramada Inn, and Reebok, we'll host our own tournament to start the season, which is great.?

The Herd?s non-conference schedule includes the first ever 5th 3rd Bank MU Classic, which will open MU?s season on Friday, November 22nd and conclude on the 23rd. The teams rounding out the tournament include American University, Florida Atlantic, and Georgia Southern. Last season, Marshall opened the season against American in the Eagle?s Tip-Off Classic with an 89-87 overtime loss in Washington, D.C. Matchups and gametimes for the tournament are still to be announced.

Marshall plays their next three out of four on the road, with games at Wake Forest, Morehead State, and Radford University, and a home game against Eastern Kentucky thrown in the middle of those games on December 1st.

The Herd then travel to Nassau, Bahamas, to take part in the Sun Splash Shootout. MU will play two games from a field of Ole Miss, Clemson, and Oakland on the 20th and 21st. Gametimes and matchups are still to be announced.

?The preseason ranking of our schedule should be 100 points higher than what it was last year. Are we ready for this kind of schedule? No, we aren't. But, we feel that we need to play this type of schedule to get where we want to be. It will be a good measuring stick for this young team.?

After Christmas, Marshall opens a home-and-home series with the University of Kentucky in Lexington on January 2nd. It will be the Herd?s first meeting with the Wildcats since the 1995-96 season. MU?s last non-conference game of the season comes on January 22nd with the annual tilt in Charleston with intrastate rival West Virginia.

Mid-American Conference play then opens up on January 8th when the Bulls of Buffalo pay a visit to the Henderson Center. Other home MAC games for Marshall include Miami, Toledo, Central Michigan, Ohio, Ball State, Kent State, and Akron.
