Men's Basketball Signs Marvin Black

8/26/2002

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University head men?s basketball coach Greg White announced today that Coffeyville Community College forward Marvin Black has signed with the Thundering Herd and will be eligible to compete this season.

?We are very excited to have Marvin join our program,? White said. ?Marvin played for a great program and a great coach at Coffeyville Community College. He is extremely athletic and he is going to fit in very well with our team.?

Black, a six-foot-seven, 215-pound forward, averaged 14 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, while shooting better than 65% from the floor for a Coffeyville squad that posted a 36-2 overall record and narrowly lost to Dixie State College (82-81) in the National Junior College Championship game.

?Marshall felt like home to me,? Black said. ?The first 15 minutes I was at Marshall I knew this is where I wanted to be. The coaches and players made me feel like a part of their family from the start.?

Black also earned second-team all-conference honors after helping coach Jay Herkelman?s Coffeyville squad to a perfect 18-0 Kansas Jayhawk Conference record last season. Black is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated from John Hay High School. Other schools that showed interest in Black were Wyoming, New Mexico, East Carolina, Oregon, and Fresno State.

Black, along with Marshall's returning and new players reported to their first classes today in Huntington.
