Marshall Women Fall To Miami, 72-53

1/20/2003

Huntington, W.Va.--The Marshall women?s basketball team (5-9, 1-3 MAC) fell to the Miami RedHawks (8-8, 3-2 MAC), 72-53, in Mid-American Conference play Monday night at the Cam Henderson Center.

The Thundering Herd hung tough against the RedHawks, closing a six-point halftime lead to one on an Amy Smith made layup with 10:27 to go in regulation. Miami quickly responded with a game-breaking 11-2 run to seal the game. Miami has now won 11 in a row over the Thundering Herd, dating back to Marshall?s first year in the Mid-American Conference in 1997-98.

?I thought we played good, solid defense for 30 minutes, but we had a lapse midway through the second half that they took advantage of,? said Marshall coach Royce Chadwick. ?A loss is a loss, but I?m proud of our effort tonight. We fought back from a big defecit in the first half, and that takes a lot of heart.?

The Herd fell behind in the first half 17-6 on a Miami 13-0 run that began three minutes into the game. Marshall was down by as many as 16, but responded towards the end of the second half, outscoring the RedHawks 18-8 to close out the period.

For the game, Marshall again struggled from the floor, shooting only 27% (17-63). The Herd outrebounded Miami 51-38, 28-12 on the offensive glass, but could not convert on the opportunities. Meanwhile, Miami was 26-56 from the floor (46.4%).

?You can?t win a game shooting 27% from the floor and not converting on offensive boards,? said Chadwick.

Marshall was led by Christina Harbin, who notched her first double-double in a Green and White uniform with 14 points and 11 rebounds. She also added four assists and four steals on the night. Ida Dotson was the only other player in double-figures for Marshall with 13. Catie Knable added ten rebounds for the Thundering Herd.

Miami had three players in double figures, led by Heather Cusick, who tallied 14 points. Kim Lancaster and Kim Smith both added ten points in the RedHawks? winning effort.

The Thundering Herd travel to Charleston for its annual rivalry with West Virginia Wednesday. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
