Women's Basketball Falls Short Against WVU

1/22/2003

Junior Catie Knable was held scoreless in Marshall's 67-63 loss to West Virginia in the annual Capital City Classic.

CHARLESTON, WV? A late surge by sophomore Sikeetha Shepard-Hall wasn?t enough to lift Marshall to an upset over West Virginia University Wednesday night in the 41st meeting between the two schools.

Marshall trailed 62-54 with 42 seconds left in the game, when Shepard-Hall scored five quick points to bring the Herd within four. After two WVU free throws, West Virginia held off any more attempts of a Marshall upset to defeat the Herd 67-63.

Shepard-Hall led all scorers with 25 points. West Virginia was led by freshman Sherell Sowho?s 24 points. Sowho shot 9-10 from the floor and 5-6 from the three point line.

?We?re improving,? Head Coach Royce Chadwick said. ?We played one of our more intense games this season, but we?re not happy we couldn?t get over the hump.?

Sophomore Amy Smith added 12 points in Marshall's heartbreaking loss. Junior Catie Knable was held scoreless in 23 minutes of action. Junior Kate Bulger score 10 points and pulled down 6 rebounds for the Mountaineers.

Both teams went into the locker room at halftime tied at 26. Marshall outscored the Mountaineers 36-22 in the paint and out-rebounded WVU 51-35, but the Mountaineers 53 percent field goal shooting was too much for the Thundering Herd.

Marshall returns to action Saturday in DeKalb, Ill., as they take on Northern Illinios in Mid-American Conference play.
