Rockets Shoot Past Thundering Herd, 70-54

HUNTINGTON, W.VA.-A hot-shooting Marshall team could not overcome 22 turnovers Wednesday night, as the Toledo Rockets defeated the Thundering Herd, 70-54, in Mid-American Conference play at the Henderson Center.
Marshall had their best shooting percentage of the year (22-44, 50%) against a Division I opponent, but Toledo capitalized on numerous miscues to come away with the victory. The Rockets shot 42.4% from the field (25-59), but committed only ten turnovers on the night. UT also made 53.3% (8-15) of their attempts from beyond the arc.
The Herd held the lead for the entire first half until UT?s Karin Hoogendam knocked down a jumper with 47 seconds left in the period; Toledo would never relinquish the lead again. MU led by as many nine in the early stages of the game.
The second half was a different story, as the Rockets quickly took control of the action, reeling off 13 of the next 15 points.
Toledo got a game-high 28 points from Tia Davis, and 15 from guard Kelly Walker.
?I thought the first five minutes of the second half was the difference in the game,? said Marshall head coach Royce Chadwick. ?We talked about that in the locker room at halftime.
?We got mixed up on some screens in the first couple of minutes of the second half, and they took advantage of us.?
The Herd got an outstanding game from senior center Amy Reed, who scored 14 points and swatted four Rocket shots. Sikeetha Shepard-Hall led Marshall in scoring with 18 points. Guard Amy Smith led MU on the boards with ten rebounds.
Chadwick stressed that turnovers really hurt his team tonight.
?The turnovers cost us the game,? said Chadwick. ?We turn the ball over that many times against the upper echelon teams of our league, and we?ll lose every time.?
Marshall returns to action Saturday afternoon against Central Michigan at 1 p.m. This weekend?s game marks the second annual Jam the Cam promotion for the Thundering Herd.
