JAM the CAM II Set For Saturday Afternoon

1/31/2003

HUNTINGTON, W.VA.-The Marshall women?s basketball team?s attempt at setting the all-time women?s basketball attendance record for the Mid-American Conference takes place Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., when the Thundering Herd take on Central Michigan in JAM THE CAM II.

Last season, in the inaugural JAM THE CAM game, Marshall had 5,256 fans walk through the turnstyles when the Herd took on Navy on December 5th. This time around, the Herd is shooting for the MAC record of 5,660, a record set when Toledo hosted Western Michigan at Savage Arena on February 24th, 1996.

This year?s JAM THE CAM opponent is Central Michigan, who enters Saturday afternoon?s game with an 8-10 overall record, 2-5 in the Mid-American Conference. Earlier this week, the Chippewas took out MAC East Division leader Kent State in overtime, 65-58, in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. CMU leads the all-time series between the two schools, 4-2, although the Thundering Herd has taken the last two meetings, including last year?s 67-64 decision at Rose Arena.

Marshall is currently in the midst of a six-game losing streak, with their last loss coming at home against Toledo Wednesday night, 70-54. The Herd has a 5-12 overall record, 1-5 in the MAC. MU is led by Ida Dotson who averages 13.0 points per game, and Sikeetha Shepard-Hall, who averages 12.2 points per game.

Numerous giveaways and promotions will take place tomorrow afternoon for the event. 1,000 Sierra Mist T-Shirts will be giving away to the first 1,000 people; Sierra Mist will give away many other prizes during the game. The Marshall R.O.T.C. will repel in the game ball prior to the start of the game at midcourt, and at halftime, Marshall University will dedicate the new Bart and Doris Andrews Women?s Basketball Suite. Also at halftime, Superior Chrysler Dodge Jeep of Ashland, KY will give two students the opportunity to win a brand new PT Cruiser. The PT Cruiser will be parked on campus prior to the event to show students what they have the opportunity to win. St. Mary's Hospital will also compete for prizes throughout the day.

After the game Saturday afternoon, the women?s basketball team will sign autographs courtside.

Later in the evening, the Marshall men take on Ohio at 7 p.m.
