YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Marshall women's swimming and diving team defeated Youngstown State, 133-107, on Saturday at Beeghly Natatorium in the season opener for the Thundering Herd.

Sophomore Milla Kuurto (Lohja, Finland) and junior Erika Nilsson (Haninge, Sweden), two all-MAC selections a year ago, led the way for the Herd (1-0) with two victories each. Kuurto finished first in both the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.19) and the 200 IM (2:08.83). Nilsson recorded first place finishes in the 500 freestyle (5:07.61) and the 200 freestyle (1:56.68).

Two Marshall freshman posted impressive collegiate debuts, as Kim Becker (St. Louis, Mo.) set a new school record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:31.42, topping the less than year old record set by Herd sophomore Emily Moe (Rockford, Mich.) when she swam a 2:32.50 versus Miami (Ohio) on Jan. 24, 2003. Emily Edmonson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) swam to a first place finish in the 100 freestyle (54.35).

"I'm real happy that Kim (Becker) broke that record," Marshall head coach Leonard Kraus said. "A lot of our girls swam very well today. It was an impressive performance for this part of the season."

Youngstown State's Kalyn Leveto registered first place finishes in 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, followed by Marshall sophomore Casey Mullholland (Stone Mountain, Ga.), who finished in second place in both events.

Marshall defeated Youngstown State in the Herd's inaugural meet on Oct. 26, 2002, also at Beeghly Natatorium, to christen the new program in its debut.

Marshall's next meet is both the Mid-American Conference and home-opener as the Rockets of Toledo invade Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium on Oct. 31 at 4 p.m.
