HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University's women's swimming and diving team opened the Mid-American Conference season today with a loss to Toledo, 167-125 at the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium.
The Herd broke two school records and one Fitch record in the loss. The 400-yard medley team(Milla Kuurto, Erika Nilsson, Kim Becker, Emily Edmonson) broke the previous school record by swimming a time of 3:59.98. The 200-yard freestyle team (Milla Kuurto, Emily Edmonson, Cara Davison, Erika Nilsso) broke the record with a time of 1:39.01. Milla Kuurto (Lohja, Finland) also broke a pool record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.64. Kuurto also added a first place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.75).
"We set 3 records today," said Marshall University Head Coach Leonard Kraus, "you can't complain about that. We lost a couple of close heats in the beginning of the meet, and I think that may have hurt us. But we swam much better in the second half."
Casey Mullholland (Stone Mountain, GA) won both the 1-meter (212.47) and the 3-meter (223.72) diving events.
"Toledo is a tough team they finished fourth in the conference last season," said Kraus, "Tonight's meet sets us up for Eastern Michigan tomorrow."
Leading the way for Toledo was Sara Stech with first place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.59) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:13.78), and Mandy Ranc, who had first place finishes in the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.06) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.93).
The Herd will take on Eastern Michigan tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium.
