Knable, Shepard-Hall Named to Preseason All-MAC Team

10/8/2003

Catie Knable

CLEVELAND ? The Mid-American Conference today announced that Marshall?s Catie Knable and Sikeetha Shepard-Hall were named to the women?s basketball preseason all-MAC team, as selected by members of the MAC News Media Association.

Knable, a senior, led the MAC in rebounding last season with a 9.0 per game average to go along with 7.1 points per game. The Floyd Knobs, Ind., native was twice named a MAC East Co-Player of the Week in 2002-03 on the way to earning an honorable mention all-MAC accolade, Marshall?s first postseason conference honor since Kristina Behnfeldt was named to the first team during the 1998-99 season.

Shepard-Hall?s presence in the MAC was strongly felt last season when the freshman point guard averaged 15.0 ppg, which led the Thundering Herd and was the eighth best total in the league. Her points per game average also placed her in eighth place nationally for freshman scoring average, guiding her to an all-MAC freshman team nod. A native of Houston, Texas, Shepard-Hall averaged 18.0 points down the stretch for the Herd (13 games) including a 20-point performance versus Northern Illinois in Marshall?s first ever MAC Tournament win.

Former MU standout Ida Dotson was named to the 2002-03 all-MAC preseason team.

?We are very excited that this recognition has come their way,? Marshall head coach Royce Chadwick said. ?It?s a tremendous honor for those young ladies, our team and Marshall University.?

Chadwick is entering his third season as head coach of the Thundering Herd, a season that the coaching staff has high expectations for.

?Hopefully this is an inkling of the direction that our program is heading,? Chadwick said. ?What you accomplish in March is most important, but this is a great start to our season.?

Marshall will play its first exhibition game on Nov. 1 versus West Virginia Tech at 12:30 p.m. at the Cam Henderson Center. The regular season will commence with the second annual Fifth Third MU Classic, hosted by the Herd and featuring Morgan State, High Point and Murray State.
