Fifth Third MU Classic to Benefit Local Charities
11/18/2003
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? This weekend?s Fifth Third MU Classic Women?s Basketball Tournament will not only kick-start the 2003-04 Marshall Thundering Herd season, but it will also boost two local charities with a halftime money-raising event at the Cam Henderson Center.
At intermission of Friday?s 5:30 p.m. contest between the Herd and Morgan State, Marshall president Dr. Dan Angel will compete head-to-head versus Ray Webb, president of Fifth Third Bank?s Ohio Valley region, in a free throw challenge. Angel will be playing for the Huntington City Mission while Webb will partake in the challenge on behalf of the Big Green Scholarship Fund. The winner?s charity will receive $1,000 while second place will garner a $500 donation.
Each participant will be afforded 53 seconds to collect the most free throws made.
This year marks the second consecutive season that Fifth Third Bank, in association with Ramada Limited and the MU Locker Room Club, has sponsored the season-opening women?s hoops tournament. Marshall won the inaugural Fifth Third MU Classic by upending American and Georgia Southern, with former Herd guard Ida Dotson securing tournament MVP honors.
The 2003 Fifth Third MU Classic features Morgan State, High Point and Murray State. High Point will face Murray State to commence the tournament at 3 p.m. on Friday, followed by Marshall?s tilt with the Lady Bears of Morgan State at approximately 5:30 p.m. Marshall will then take on either High Point or Murray State at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, with the two remaining schools to do battle earlier in the day at 1 p.m.
