Watts to Play in East-West Shrine Game
12/16/2003
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Marshall University wide receiver Darius Watts will play for the East in the 79th annual East-West Shrine Game on January 10th at Pac Bell Park in San Francisco. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. (EST) and ESPN will carry the game live.
Watts finished his career at Marshall as the Mid-American Conference?s all-time leader in receiving yards (4,031), receptions (272, and touchdown receptions (47). His 47 career touchdown receptions are the second most ever accumulated by an NCAA Division 1-A receiver and is just three shy of the national record of 50 set by Louisiana Tech?s Troy Edwards. His 272 receptions rank as the fifth highest total in Division 1-A history.
John Robinson from UNLV, and Walt Harris from the University of Pittsburgh will lead the West and East squads, respectively during the East-West Shrine Game.
Every year since 1925, the Shrine Game has been played to raise money and to help make the public aware of the expert orthopedic and burn care available, at no cost, at all 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children. To date, the game has raised more than $14 million for Shriners Hospitals and has helped inform millions of people about the mission of this extraordinary philanthropy.
Watts joins Marshall offensive linemen Nate McPeek and Luke Salmons in post season action. Salmons and McPeek will represent the Herd in the Blue-Gray Classic on December 25th. Marshall Head Coach Bob Pruett and assistant coach Larry Kueck will coach the Blue team offense in that game.
